60 firefighters rushed to control an explosion at Indaver’s flagship Antwerp facility today (26 Feb 2016) in what was described by local fire services as a ‘municipal disaster’ as they shut down the nearby road tunnel and requested residents close doors and windows.
The explosion, the cause of which is not yet clear, according to Indaver started in a road tanker. Indaver Belgium have described the incident as a violent explosion followed by three fires. It took almost 4 hours to get completely under control. See video below.
Videos and photos captured by locals show the explosion and enormous plume. Click to enlarge
The explosion provides damning evidence that:
- The location in Ringaskiddy is absolutely unsuitable for such a plant, and the risk to local residents, students, staff and Naval personnel is completely unacceptable
- Accidents do happen at incinerators and waste treatment plants
- Accidents do happen at Indaver’s facilities
